History in the Making

Today is an historic day: Barack Obama is being sworn in as our 44th president. Obama will be the first president that Ollie will remember.

Mike, Merrit, and I have been watching the inauguration coverage on CNN.com. The swearing-in won't be until about 12:00pm...about an hour from now. It's been really cool to explain to Merrit why this is such an important day in American history.

You can faintly see Obama on my laptop screen. Oblivious to the magnitude of the day, Ollie bounces happily nearby.

We made Merrit watch the whole thing, much to his fidgety displeasure. ;-)

Later, he worked on a handwriting exercise entitled "Inauguration Day."

Today just feels kind of magical. Not only Barack Obama's inauguration...It's also snowing, which is so rare here in our neck of the woods. Merrit is SO excited! And Mike is home from work, so it definitely feels like a holiday. Merrit's already been out in the back yard three times. He comes in, we throw his wet stuff in the dryer, he warms up, and then goes back out for another round.

Mike and Merrit are getting bundled up in a few minutes to go outside and sled down our driveway. So far, there are about 5 inches of snow on the ground. And it's still snowing!

I'm getting ready to put on a big pot of chili. Mmm, mmm.
